How To

How to Fly Drones at a Beginning Level

A drone is a remotely-controlled aircraft that is used for aerial photography and surveillance. Drones are a technology that has been around since World War II. DJI introduced their Phantom series of quadcopters in 2010, but commercial use only began in 2010. Since then, there have been many different types of drones available, from beginner-friendly models like the Parrot AR Drone 2.0 to professional-grade multi-rotor craft like the DJI Mavic Pro.

There are many options for flying a drone.

  1. Remote control - This allows you to control the drone from your hand. There are two main types: Joysticks (like a radio), and On/Off switches (like an alarm clock).
  2. Manual Control – This method lets users remotely control the drone by using a smartphone app. You must keep track of the location where you want the drone to go and follow the instructions from the app.
  3. Autonomous Flying - This allows the drone to take over all of the piloting duties. It is basically flying autonomously and without human intervention. The drone must be equipped with a camera and sensors that can capture images and data in order to fly autonomously.
  4. Triggered Flying - This method works in the same way as manual control. However, the pilot has to manually set up a route for the drone and it follows that route until reaching the endpoint. The drone automatically lands once the route has been completed and returns to the base.
  5. Landing Gear- Some drones include landing gear that allows for safe landing if the power goes out or they run out of batteries.
  6. Goggles – Pilots often wear goggles while flying to keep themselves safe from any debris.
  7. Camera - Some drones are equipped with cameras allowing you to capture photos and videos from above.
  8. Obstacles – Some drones have obstacle avoidance systems that stop them from colliding with obstacles.
  9. Speed – Some drones can reach speeds in excess of 40 mph.
  10. Battery Life – Most drones will last 20 minutes to three hours depending on how powerful they are.
  11. Distance - Some drones can travel up 30 miles depending on the model.
  12. Power source - Some drones need an external power source, while others use internal batteries.
  13. Weight – Some drones are less than one pound, while other models can be up to four pounds.
  14. Size - Drones can range in size from tiny devices that can fit in your palm to heavy crafts that weigh 50 pounds.
  15. Price - From high-end models that cost thousands of dollars to low-cost options that start at $100, all drones fall under a certain price category.
